Planning Sound (32)

Diegetic sound is sound in which the source is visible on screen or shown to be present by the action of the film. This can be through voices of characters or sounds made by objects in the film.

In my music video I don't plan on using any diegetic sound as I want the focus of my video to be on the connection between the song and its lyrics to the narrative of my video. I don't plan to include any dialogue in my video which would rule out the use of diegetic sounds from the character and I feel any diegetic sound from the locations would just break apart the narrative. However I do feel there are two places in which diegetic sound could be appropriate and therefore when I edit my music video I may play about and see if the diegetic sound fits there. The first place would be at the very beginning of the music video where I will display the title. Here I will have an establishing shot of the beach as that'll be my very first location. I could include diegetic sound of waves crashing on the beach to show the relaxing atmosphere before going into the song and the rest of the music video. This I fell will help start the music video and give the right atmosphere I wish to create from the beginning. The second place that I could include diegetic sound is when the police knock at the door. I feel that this is a very important moment in the narrative of the video and having the knocking at the door so prominent in the video will help to emphasis the seriousness and tension of that moment.

Foley sound is the sound effects that are added to a film during post production to enhance audio quality. This can be things like footsteps and breaking glass etc.

Again I don't plan on using any foley sound in my music video for the same reason I don't plan on using any diegetic sound. However if I did plan to add sound in the two places I talked about before, then I may use foley sound as apposed to diegetic sound. It would probably be a lot easier to put the sound for those two places in my music video in the post production rather than in the production. By adding the sound that way I can ensure that I get the exact sound that I want and I don't have to worry about any other background sound.

For my music video I plan on using no lip syncing. This is due to the fact that I want to create this emotional video and I feel that including lip syncing and cutting away from the narrative to the 'singer' would take away from the whole tone and atmosphere of the music video and the song. Diegetic sound and foley sound I feel would be less intrusive and so i wouldn't mind including them in my video, but lip syncing I feel would just take away from the whole feel I wish to create with this video.
