Planning - Directing Style (34)
In my music video I am uncertain on what particular directing style I will use when filming, however in my video I do plan on using certain techniques to help portray my narrative.
The most important technique will be using flashbacks which help to illustrate to the viewer the relationship between the father and daughter. It is very important therefore that when filming I am able to get across to the viewer that certain scenes are flashbacks and are not part of the regular narrative.
I also wish to use lots of close ups and extreme close ups in my video to get across the detail and emotion of the video to the viewers. This again is another important aspect of my video as I feel that these shots are crucial in creating a cathartic music video.
Edgar Wright is a British director, screenwriter, producer and actor. In his films he tends to move at a fast pace and his method of using quick montages helps to do this. This technique often shows characters doing mundane but important tasks in order to prepare for the next scene which is a technique that helps to advance the story. He also tends to use a lot of close ups to help show important details and help link scenes in his filming.
For my music video I feel I may draw inspiration from Edgar Wright as I do wish to use a lot of close ups in my music video. I also feel that his technique of using quick montages could be effective in my music video when showing all of the photographs hanging in the daughters room. By using the quick montage I will be able to show the viewers all of the memories that daughter has captured with her friends and father before showing longer close up on the important photographs which will lead to the flashbacks.
Wes Anderson is a film director, producer, screenwriter and actor who is known for his distinctive visual and narrative style. He has been noted for his distinctive style of film making through his obsession with symmetrical composition. He is also known for his extensive use of flat space camera moves, slow-motion walking shots and deliberate limited colour palette.
This is a particular directing style which I found very interesting and unusual. Again I feel when creating my music video I may draw some inspiration from Wes Anderson and have some of my shots centred. I feel that this style wont draw away from the emotion I will be trying to create but will provide viewers with an interesting and different style of video.
Previously I have researched the director David Wilson who is a London based director and animator. He is most well known for his music videos, having created videos for artists like David Guatta, the Arctic Monkeys and The Maccabees. He takes enjoyment from crossing disciplines between animation and live action, often combining the two to create something unique. Although I found his style incredibly fascinating I don't think I will be using his style in my music video as I feel his style wouldn't fit with my narrative.
