Planning - Editing (33)
In my music video I plan to have quite a bit of editing applied to my video. The most significant bit of editing will be adding the filter to all the memory/flashback scenes to make them look like memories/flashbacks to the audience. I also plan to use cuts, fades, quick montage and a mix of long and short takes in my music video. All these different editing techniques I feel will help bring my narrative together and help me to create the emotional video I am trying to construct.
1 - Location at the beach (establishing shot in a long take.) This will have the title fade in then out before cutting to the next shot.
2 - Father and daughter walking along the beach (Close up, mid shots and tracking shots.) A mix of long and short takes will be used here to help show the calm atmosphere and the emotion on the characters faces. A lot of cuts will occur during this scene before cutting to the next section.
3 - Rock pooling ( close up, extreme close up, mid shot and wide shot.) A mix of long and short takes to shown the creatures in the rock pools as well as the characters emotions. Again a lot of jump cuts will be used in this section to lead to the next scene.
4 - Eating fish and chips (mid shot and close ups.) Here I will have a long take and I will again have a jump cut to the next scene
5 - Father and daughter sailing boats (close up, extreme close up, mid shot.) Here I will have a few cuts from the beat to the father and daughter before fading to black then the next scene.
6 - Location back at home
7 - Police knock at the door (close up, extreme close up, shot reverse shot and mid shot.) Here I will have cuts from the police knocking on the door to the father answering it and then back again to the officer talking before finally cutting back on to the father.
8 - Father breaks down after he finds out his daughters dead (close up and extreme close up.) I will again use jump cuts in this footage.
9 - Location the daughters bedroom (establishing shot.) Here I might use a quick montage to show what is in the daughters bedroom before cutting back to the father and then cutting to the next scene
10 - Father looks at the daughters pictures (close ups, extreme close ups and mid shots.) Here I will cut from the father and then to the photo he is holding)
11 - Flashback to the forest (establishing shot.) During this scene I will zoom into the photo before effortlessly cutting to the actual footage of the location. I will also add a filter to this footage to make it clear that this is a memory/flashback.
12 - Father and daughter shown having fun in the forest (wide shot, mid shot, close up and tracking shot) Here I will add a filter to the footage to make it clear that this is a memory/flashback. I will also have jump cuts between the two characters in the memory.
13 - Father and daughter shown walking in the forest (tracking shot, mid shot and close up) Here I will again have a mix of long and short takes with a filter over the footage to make it look like a memory.
14 - Flashback to the garden. Cut from the father and the photograph to the memory.
15 - Father and daughter shown playing with sparklers in the garden (close up, extreme close up and mid shots) Here I will have a mix of long and short takes as well as possibly having some slow motion of the sparklers burning. I will also have a filter over the footage and use several jump cuts.
16 - Daughter shown playing with the rabbits (close up, extreme close up, mid shot, wide shot and tracking shot) I will use a mix of long and short takes to show the daughter playing with the rabbits as well as jump cuts to show different angles/footage of the daughter with the rabbits. Again I will have the filter over the footage to make it look like a memory before cutting to the next scene.
17 - Flashback to the field. Cut from the father and the photograph to the memory.
18 - Father and daughter walking the dogs (tracking shot, mid shot, shot reverse shot and establishing shots) Lots of long and short takes here of the father, daughter and the dogs. A lot of cutting between footage as well as the filter to make the footage look like a memory.
19 - Father and daughter shown walking in the field (tracking shot, mid shot) Lots of long and short takes here of the father, daughter and the dogs. A lot of cutting between footage as well as the filter to make the footage look like a memory.
20 - Back at the house (end of flashbacks) Cut away from the memories to the father holding the photograph and then cutting from the photograph to the fathers face. This will be a long shot.
21 - Father looking at all the photos on the desk in the daughters room and finding the one from their last day together (close up and mid shot) Long shot with a few cut aways from the father to the photo on the desk and then back to the father.
22 - Father seen gathering some of the small, precious things from the daughters room (close up and extreme close up) Lots of short takes here with lots of cutting before fading to the beach.
23 - Location at the beach. Long shot
24 - Father seen making a raft and wading out into the sea with it. He then places it into the ocean with the photo of his daughter and a few of her belongings (close up, extreme close up, mid shot, wide shot and tracking shot) A mix of long and short takes with quite a few cuts to see what the father is doing. At the very end we see the raft in the sea which will be a long shot before having the scene fade to black.
Narrative
Non linear narrative is when events are portrayed out of chronological order or in other ways where the narrative does not follow in chronological order. This can be through parallel distinctive plot lines, dream immersions or narrating another story inside the main plot line. Non linear narrative has often been used to mimic the human memory, which is one of the main reasons my music video will follow a non linear narrative. I will be showing flashbacks to the past which serve as the fathers memories which is why I have chosen to follow a non linear narrative for my music video. On the other hand a linear narrative is when event are portrayed in chronological order and follows one singular line of narrative.
The Kuleshov effect
Lev Kuleshov was arguably the first film theorist and demonstrated that editing was a vital part of film that could evoke emotions based on what shots were shown together. This editing technique shows the concept that viewers can obtain meaning from two sequential shots and this meaning can change depending on what the shots are.
In my music video I plan on using the Kuleshov effect to help show the deep emotion from the father at the lose of his daughter. I feel that by showing first the pictures of the daughter and father happy and then cutting to the father distraught in the bedroom will help to show the raw emotion the father is feeling at the lose of his daughter and will also show the juxtaposition of the happy times they had together to the depression the father is feeling now.
