What was the film?
The film I chose to watch was Forrest Gump which stars Tom Hanks as the main character. The film is about a boy who has a low I.Q but good intentions. His childhood is spent with his only friend Jenny before he joins the army to fight in Vietnam. Throughout his life he achieves many things, winning medals, meeting the president and being captain of a shrimp boat, though none of this is as important as his childhood sweetheart Jenny. The majority of the film is told by Forrest Gump on a bench re-telling his life to strangers while waiting for a bus. When he reaches the present time he tells the strangers that he received a letter from Jenny and that he is going to meet her. From here he discovers that he has a son and decides to marry Jenny. Not long after this she dies of a virus and the film ends with his child waiting for the bus for his first day of school.
Have you ever heard of the film before?
Before watching the film Forrest Gump I had heard a little about it from friends but I had never watched it myself. I knew that it was meant to be a good film according to them but I didn't know who the cast was or what the plot was.
What was good/bad?
I personally really liked the film and I liked how it retold all the significant moments in Forrest Gump's life. I also liked how we also got to see glimpses of Jenny's life throughout the film so we could understand what was happening to her and how her life differed from Gump's. There wasn't really anything in the film which I thought was bad or I didn't enjoy. I felt that how the beginning was displayed was unique and creative, with the first part of the story being told as a memory to strangers by Forrest Gump. I also liked how the beginning started with a white feather falling from the sky and landing by Gump's feat, and the ending finishing with a white feather floating up into the sky. It gave the film a cycle and made it feel like this was the life cycle of Forrest Gump and now it is over, just like the film is.
Anything you would like to use as an idea for your music video?
This film has given me a few ideas for a music video. One of which would be using numerous locations as part of a narrative which is similar to how in Forrest Gump many different locations are used to illustrate his life. Another aspect I thought would be good to incorporate into a music video was the white feather. I liked how it seemed insignificant but then by the end of the film it had a meaning and becomes very significant in demonstrating life. This would be something that I think would be quite interesting to incorporating in a music video, where you see something that you think isn't important and then as the narrative plays out, you realise the significance of it.
Would you recommend the film to anyone else?
I would definitely recommend this film to others. I felt that the plot was very good and I enjoyed how the film was presented. I felt that it was very creatively produced and I think that the plot would be something that most people would find engaging.
