Music video Timeline

Why were music videos created?

In the 1930's when 'Screen Songs' were introduced, these videos were made with the intention of getting audiences to sing along to the songs and have fun. This was used to help publicise the songs/artists as well as to get the audiences more involved with the songs by encouraging them to sing along with them.

In the 1960's more modern styles of music videos were created which actually included the band in them. This again helped to promote the songs/artists and put a face to the name for audiences. These types of videos helped to promote the band along with their songs.

In 1981, MTV was created which helped in promoting the music videos to audiences. This would help the marketing of albums for the artists as their songs would be played on the TV which many people would see, and then it would encourage them to buy the albums. It also helped to promote bands/artists by showing their music videos which could encourage people to listen to the artists.

In 2005 YouTube was crated which made it even easier for artists to promote themselves and their music. YouTube is a free online site which anyone can use to either to watch or upload content. This site is now one of the main ways in which people watch music videos due to the fast and easy access there is to it. Unlike music channels, YouTube allows people to watch whatever music videos they want and they don't have to wait for it to come on like you do on music channels.
